De Carthage à Jéricho
Du Ve siècle à la fin du Ier siècle a.C., de l'Afrique du Nord à la Judée en passant par la Sicile, l'Italie, la Grèce et l'Asie Mineure, des milliers de guerriers celtes ont été recrutés par les Carthaginois et les Grecs. Les mercenaires celtes jouèrent un rôle souvent décisif dans le théâtre des guerres méditerranéennes pendant cinq siècles. Guerriers étrangers, motivés par l'appât du gain et la recherche de terres où s'installer, les Celtes essaimèrent partout sur tous les fronts où leur savoir-faire technique et leur bravoure paraissaient indispensables.
Luc Baray nous propose de déconstruire le mythe et de revenir aux sources littéraires pour déterminer avec précision et érudition quelles ont été l'origine et l'importance de ces mercenaires dans les armées de Méditerranée. From the Vth century to the end of the Ist century BC, from North Africa to Judea, passing through Sicily, Italy, Greece and Asia Minor, thousands of warriors had been recruited by the Carthaginians and Greeks. Celtic mercenaries played an often decisive rôle in the theatre of Mediterranean wars for five centuries. Foreign warriors, spurred on by greed and the search for lands to settle, the Celts swarmed everywhere on all fronts where their technical knowledge and bravery seemed indispensable.
Luc Baray suggests that we should deconstruct the myths and return to the literary sources in order to determine with accuracy and erudition the origins and the importance of these mercenaries in the Mediterranean armies. He draws up a precise account of the knowledge available and allows us to understand the nature of the engagements, the particular context of recruitment, in seeking always to distinguish the statutes - mercenary or auxiliary - lying behind the denominations.
This close analysis of the texts also provides us with a new light on all these fronts that shook and tore the Mediterranean before the end of the Ist century BC.
