The author of three award-winning books – The Moscow State Yiddish Theater: Jewish Culture on the Soviet Stage , Jewish Public Culture in the Late Russian Empire , and In the Shadow of the Shtetl: Small-Town Jewish Life in Soviet Ukraine – he is widely recognized as the leading scholar of the Holocaust and Jewish Studies. He is the Vice-President of the Association for Jewish Studies and the Associate Chair of the Academic Advisory Committee to the Center for Jewish History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
