"Early in the Civil War, the Union sought to put a quick end to the Southern rebellion by capturing Richmond, Virginia, the new capital of the Confederacy. CHRIS MACKOWSKI is a professor in the Jandoli School of Communication at St. Bonaventure University and historian-in-residence at Stevenson Ridge, a historic property on the Spotsylvania battlefield. He is series editor for both Emerging Civil War and Engaging the Civil War and is cofounder of the Emerging Civil War blog.
