G.I. Taylor was one of the great physical scientists of this century, and was notable for the originality and independence of his thinking. He made outstanding contributions to the mechanics of fluid and solid materials, and his ideas have had wide application in meteorology, oceanography, mechanical, civil and chemical engineering, hydraulics and material science.
