Many of us will eagerly say that we trust God, but our fretful prayers and worried mumblings reflect the truer situation of our hearts. We pray but lay awake at night working through what-if's. We profess belief in God's sovereignty while we simultaneously maneuver and manipulate situations and people in order to achieve the outcome we desire. We say "God is in control!" But we live as if we bear sole responsibility for circumstances clearly beyond our ability. The self-help "gospel" that pervades our time, places the burden of managing our whole lives squarely on our shoulders.
