Flaviana Xavier Antunes Sampaio is a Professor at the Bahia Southwest State University, Brazil. She has studied Dance at Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. level, and has been researching dance lighting since 2004. Her works have been presented in the UK, Japan, Brazil, and Czech Republic.

This book pioneers the discussion of the ability of lighting design to foreground shadow in dance performances.Through a series of experiments integrating light, shadow and improvised dance movement, it analyses what it advances as an innovative expression of shadow in dance.
