Economic theory suggests at least two types of benefits that may arise through futures trading. First, futures trading provides for shifting risks from produc tion and marketing specialists to others who are willing to bear the risks at lower costs.2 In this respect, it serves as an alternative to other types of capital markets such as the stock market or contracting.
