The interest taken in Dickens and Thackeray is much greater in America than it is in England; and the interest in Dickens far exceeds the interest in Thackeray. Dickens is worshipped; Thackeray is admired. My known connection with both these distinguished men invited much examination-in-chief, and even cross-examination, when about ten years ago I visited the United States. I had to describe the two men, their appearance, their tastes and habits, and their points of re semblance, Which were very few.
