Le 12 octobre 1933, en gare de Genève, Annemarie Schwarzenbach monte à bord de l'Orient-Express. Destination : Istanbul. La reporter-photographe accompagne un groupe d'archéologues pour une mission de six mois à travers la Turquie, la Syrie, la Palestine, l'Irak et la Perse, tandis qu'en Allemagne les nazis détruisent la démocratie. Mêlant découvertes archéologiques, observations politiques sur la fin d'un empire et journal intime, ce récit de voyage est aussi, pour l'auteure de Où est la terre des promesses ?, l'occasion de commencer à voir dans l'Orient un symbole de l'égarement existentiel de l'être humain.
