Excerpt from A New Potential Principle in Nature: Elasticity a Mode of Motion, Being a Popular Description of a New and Important Discovery in Science

The discovery which I am about to describe was first impressed on my attention twenty-eight years ago, when a student attending Sir William Thomson's class in the old college of Glasgow University. But I did not thoroughly appreciate the importance of the matter until about fifteen years ago. Since then, although cognizant of the true cause of gravitation, I have not been in a position to take advantage of the immense power, and wonderful insight, that such knowledge confers.

My business as a mining engineer requiring all my time and attention, and not being a recognized authority in natural sciences, my desultory efforts from time to time to call the attention of the recognized authorities on the subject, to the facts of the case, have met with no success.
