Excerpt from Varia Socratica: First Series
In arguing my case I have necessarily made constant use of Diels's Dowagraphi and Vorsokmtikcr, and perhaps to an even greater extent of my colleague Professor Burnet's work on Early Greek Philosophy. To these, and to all other works of which I have availed myself, I beg once for all to express my grateful obligations. I trust, however, that in the main my conclusions have been made my own by genuine direct personal thought. Where I have been conscious of owing the first suggestion of a train of thought to others, I have tried to make proper acknowledgment of the fact. My work might no doubt have been much benefited by a closer study of the current literature of its subject, but, whether for good or bad, I have sought mainly to see with my own eyes rather than with the spectacles of others, and to be guided (i hope the ex pression is not unduly selfconfident) by the two watch words 75 33 (pus.
