Por medio de un pequeño número de objetos, los niños pueden con facilidad adquirir ideas cabales de los dife rentes procedimientos aritméticos, y desde el principio acostumbrarse a prescindir de la teoría de las reglas. Con seis pequeñas trozas de madera pueden aprender a sumar 4 y 2, a restar 4 de 6, a multiplicar 3 por 2, y a dividir 6 por 2, sin sospechar que existen las pesadas reglas que se hallan en nuestros libros de aritmética. También pueden aprender a buscar de 6 ó de 6, sin siquiera oir los ter minos: Quebrado, numerador, denominador.
