Elle ne connaît que le présent, ignore tout du passé, et en réalité ne sait rien, puisque le présent n'existe qu'à condition d'être solidement relié au passé par une affinité dont nous ayons conscience. Parfois, honteuse de ne jamais évoquer le génie, elle lance au hasard un nom, ridicule dans sa bouche, plus ridicule encore par l'amoindrissement qu'elle lui impose en le comparant à d'autres noms, infimes. Elle dit Hugo, Balzac, Taine, Goethe à propos du premier poète ou romancier venu. Et elle se tient pour satisfaite, ayant payé à une confuse justice un tribut de politesse.
