Il saggio di Guido de Giorgio, tratta l'esposizione delle "linee generali di una società costituita secondo le norme di una tradizione veramente tale", basata sulla "armonia tra contemplazione e azione". Attraverso una rettificazione che vada "dall'interno all'esterno", sarà allora possibile la restaurazione dello spirito di Roma riprendendo il pensiero, l'aspirazione e l'ideale di Dante. Grazie al recupero di "simboli antichi" ciò potrà essere attuabile anche in un mondo che è apparente dominio della scienza positiva e del numero. Uno di questi simboli è il Giano bifronte, immagine della romanità intesa come "principio comune e potere unificatore di due tradizioni ricondotte alla loro precisa "distinzione".
