« Piggle », c'est le surnom que ses parents ont donné à Gabrielle, une petite fille de deux ans et demi que Winnicott va suivre pendant trois ans, entre 1964 et 1966, à seize reprises et « à la demande » (l'enfant habite loin de Londres). Dans ce « journal », le célèbre psychanalyste rapporte à la fois les séances elles-mêmes, ses propres notes et commentaires, ainsi que les échanges avec les parents.
