Sch erer never in his lifetime or in his own country attained the rank of a popular writer, but by those who know, both at home and abroad, he was recog nized as a leading authority in European literature, and since his death his reputation has steadily grown. For Englishmen he has a special interest. He had English blood in his veins; he spoke our language perfectly, he knew our country and its institutions, and he had profoundly studied our literature. Against the gibe of an English critic that a bibliomaniac collector of second editions could procure no single volume of Scherer may be set the high compliment that Matthew Arnold paid him in selecting two of Scherer's Etude; as the text for his discourses on Milton and on Goethe.
