Excerpt from Wilhelm Tell: A Play
OF all the German literary productions there is perhaps not one, with which Americans sympathize so completely as with Schiller's great Drama of Wilhelm Tell; the unity of the action, the spirit of liberty which pervades every line, the simplicity of the scenes, the few difficulties which its language presents, when compared with other works of equal worth, all combine to make this a general favorite with those who study the German language. The object in publishing this work in the present form is simply to place it within reach of everybody.
Some explanatory Notes have been added, where the idioms presented difficulties, or where words occurred, not generally found in Dictionaries, such as technical and local expressions, which Schiller places in the mouth of the Swiss peasant and shepherd.
