Excerpt from Der Trompeter Von Säkkingen

Joseph victor von scheffel was born in Karlsruhe, the chief town of Baden, Feb. 16, 1826. His natal star was almost as propitious as that of Goethe. Like the latter, he inherited from a gifted and imaginative mother a poetic cast of nature, while to the severer temperament and greater worldly wisdom of his father he owed the art of orderly and practical living. The father was of the rank of Major, and, like Goethe, the young Scheffel grew up in comfortable circumstances, having in school and university the best advantages which the times afforded. Like Goethe, too, he possessed a deeply loved sister, who was his trusted confidante in whatever affected his life.

Of great importance in the poet's early development was the magical effect wrought on his spirit by the natural beauty of his home and its neighboring haunts. The spring-freshened valleys, sun-kissed meadows, and moun tains dark with pines, awakened his characteristic love of nature, while the ruins that crowned his native hills fostered in him an inborn tendency to linger over the romance of the past. Scheffel's boyhood was marked, not only by nu common diligence and ease of apprehension, but by an inner devotion to intellectual pursuits which caused him to spend many of his leisure hours in sketching or in the study of history and literature.
