Thomas Mann l'appelait l'« ange dévasté » et Roger Martin du Gard la remerciait de « promener sur cette terre son beau visage d'ange inconsolable ». Tout à la fois écrivain, journaliste, photographe et archéologue, issue d'une famille de riches industriels zurichois, Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942) n'a cessé de fuir un milieu en complète contradiction avec ses aspirations.
De la Russie à la Perse, des États-Unis au Congo, son existence fut certes marquée par la morphine et plusieurs internements, mais aussi par une lutte acharnée contre le nazisme au travers de ses écrits et de son amitié tumultueuse avec Klaus et Erika, les enfants terribles de Thomas Mann. Plusieurs de ses livres ont été traduits pour les Éditions Payot par Dominique Laure Miermont.
