Ruines et paysages d'Egypte

Gaston Maspero (1846-1916), successeur de Mariette à la direction du Service des Antiquités au Caire, où il passa plus de vingt ans, est un des plus illustres égyptologues français. On lui doit notamment l'aménagement de l'actuel Musée égyptien du Caire, la traduction pionnière de contes de l'Égypte ancienne, la découverte des fameux «textes des Pyramides» et de la cachette des momies royales de Deir el-Bahari.

Mais l'écrivain restait à découvrir: c'est chose faite avec ce recueil d'impressions et de souvenirs publié en 1910. Ruines et paysages d'Égypte, dont la présence dans la bibliothèque de Freud témoigne de la portée exceptionnelle, appartient à l'histoire d'une Europe cherchant son identité au miroir des décombres antiques.
