C'est peu dire que les Romains ont aimé l'amour : dès les débuts de leur histoire, ils l'ont chanté, loué, mis en valeur - et ils l'ont bien sûr pratiqué, sous toutes ses formes.
L'amour est au centre de leurs préoccupations comme il est au centre de l'édifice des mœurs et de la vie sociale. Tout d'abord lié au sacré, il s'en dissocie pour devenir institution, avant de se diversifier dans ses pratiques et ses représentations, au I^er siècle avant J.-C. C'est alors qu'il devient vraiment libre, et que les poètes s'en emparent pour chanter toutes ses nuances. Il est pour beaucoup dans certains destins politiques (César, Cléopâtre, Antoine, ou Titus et Bérénice) ; il est aussi pour beaucoup dans la dégradation de l'Empire (Messaline, Néron, etc.).
