Après sept ans de vie conjugale auprès d'un mari fort commun, ambitieux et volage, Julie de Chaverny retrouve Darcy, un de ses soupirants d'autrefois.

L'auteur de Colomba écrit à trente ans, en 1833, ce roman inspiré, dit-on, par son idylle manquée avec George Sand. Sous un titre qui rappelle Marivaux, il donne une étude psychologique pleine de finesse et d'ironie, aux antipodes du pathos et de l'effusion romantiques.
