Jeux de massacre ne raconte plus l'agonie d'un homme comme Le Roi se meurt : toute une ville passe ici de vie à trépas.
À travers l'allégorie de la peste qui incarne le mal absolu, la mort qui frappe chacun sans distinction, Ionesco nous montre une hécatombe.
Comme les têtes grimaçantes des jeux forains, les fantoches burlesques de cette danse macabre de l'âge atomique tombent tous, les uns après les autres, tandis qu'un moine noir, figure de la mort, traverse silencieusement la scène en contemplant, indifférent, le désastre.
