La jeune comtesse hongroise Irma Sztàray reçut pour mission en 1894 d'accompagner Élisabeth d'Autriche dans ses cures et ses voyages méditerranéens. Elle s'en acquitta jusqu'au 10 septembre 1898, jour où l'impératrice fut poignardée à Genève par l'anarchiste italien Luigi Lucheni. Fuir avec Sa Majesté la foule et les mondanités n'était pas de tout repos ; pourtant Irma s'y prêtait de bonne grâce, et son dévouement de tous les instants éclaire d'un jour nouveau le mythe Sissi. La comtesse Sztàray ne publia son récit qu'en 1909 et mourut célibataire en 1940.
