La Fontaine n'appartient pas à la même classe que ces deux écrivains quoique avec plus d'abandon encore il ait épanché son âme dans ses ouvrages; mais cette âme était d'une nature moins forte moins exceptionnelle; plus propre à sympathiser avec celle des autres. Ame douce, naïve sincère, qui se ma nifeste à nous de la manière la plus aimable, parce qu'on s'a perçoit toujours qu'elle est aimante. Jamais la Fontaine ne s'occupe de lui que pour nous - mêmes; son imagination nous frappe sans effort, sa raison nous persuade sans contrainte; il nous attendrit quelquefois, nous réjouit souvent, nous con sole toujours. Comme moraliste.
