Excerpt from Windsor Castle, Vol. 1: A Historical Romance

The marriage with the staid and homely Catherine was a loveless one, though it lasted for over twenty years, dur ing which she bore a daughter to the king in the Princess Mary, afterwards ill-known, when she came in turn to the throne (in for her persecution of Protestants as Bloody Mary, and as wife of Philip of Spain, son of the Emperor Charles V., who was obnoxious also to the Eng lish. To Henry VIII., as we have said, his marriage was not a happy one, since as he grew older his strong will often broke through all restraints and he gave eager rein to his. Passionate and lustful nature. He moreover wished for a male heir to the throne, and hence, when he came under the wiles of Anne Boleyn, Henry besought the then Pope to pronounce his marriage with Catherine of Aragon null and void, on the ground that she had been his brother's widow. The Pope, being at this time in the power of Spain, temporized, and the king suspecting his ambitious Lord High Chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey, of thwarting his designs, he broke with both Pope and Cardinal, humbling and finally dismissing the latter, until Wolsey died of a broken spirit before he could be tried for treason.
