Excerpt from J. William White: A Biography
In one regard the boy's life was a stormy one. A tendency to quarrel, and a still more fatal readiness to uphold his dispute by force, tried the patience of his teachers beyond endurance. He delighted in war fare, and paid scant heed to causes or to consequences. Again and again they asked why such a little fire eater should be retained in the ranks, and again and again the child's truthfulness, integrity, and stead fast application to his studies pleaded for pardon. If, on a Monday morning, Mrs. White was seen aecom panying her abashed son to school, the neighbours said, There goes Bill White's mother to make peace with his teachers. She has her hands full anyway.
