Après Éden
Treizième exposition de la série Privées, Après Éden propose un ensemble de plus de 800 photographies de la Collection Walther. En une vingtaine d'années, Artur Walther, originaire d'Ulm (Allemagne) a réuni l'une des plus importantes collections de photographies au monde, exceptionnelle par sa dimension internationale, et par la qualité et la cohérence de ses séries d'un même artiste. Depuis 2010, La Collection Walther est exposée au public dans deux lieux, à Neu-Ulm et New York. Pour La maison rouge, le commissaire Simon Njami a conçu une exposition-fable autour de l'humain, à partir de thématiques telles que le paysage, le portrait, la ville, l'altérité, en croisant des oeuvres et des pratiques photographiques d'époques, de provenances et de statuts différents, mais toutes liées par leur approche sérielle du médium.
Dans l'exposition et le catalogue qui l'accompagne, les pionniers de la photographie conceptuelle allemande (Karl Blossfeldt, August Sander, Bernd et Hilla Becher) dialoguent avec des photographes contemporains d'Europe, des États-Unis, mais surtout d'Afrique et d'Asie (parmi lesquels Richard Avedon, Nobuyoshi Araki, Seydou Keïta, Santu Mofokeng, Zanele Muholi, Zhang Huan), ainsi qu'avec des auteurs anonymes d'images ethnographiques, scientifiques ou judiciaires des siècles derniers.
This thirteenth exhibition in the privées series presents a selection of more than 800 photographs from The Walther Collection. Over a period of twenty years, Artur Walther (born in Ulm, Germany), has assembled one of the most important collections of photography in the world, remarkable for its international scope, its quality, and its focus on large series by individual artists. Since 2010, The Walther collection has been on show to the public in two museum spaces, one in Neu-Ulm and one in New York.
For La maison rouge, the curator Simon Njami has conceived an exhibition-cum-fable that offers a broad view of human subjects, based on themes like landscape, portraiture, the city, and alterity, and combining works and photographic practices from different periods and origins that are all linked by a serial approach to the medium.
In the exhibition and its catalogue, German conceptual pioneers (Karl Blossfeldt, August Sander, and Bernd and Hilla Becher) are presented in dialogue with contemporary photographers from Europe, the United States and, above all, Africa and Asia (including Richard Avedon, Nobuyoshi Araki, Seydou Keïta, Santu Mofokeng, Zanele Muholi, and Zhang Huan), but also with images whose unidentified authors were working in ethnographic, scientific, or legal contexts.
