He took his undergraduate training at Northwestern University, obtained his medical degree at the Chicago Medical School, and completed a fellowship in clinical nutrition at UCLA and received his MS in public health. He has served on 21 peer-reviewed journal editorial boards and has authored nearly 250 peer-reviewed articles, editorials, and book chapters, as well as four books. He has received numerous awards from several societies and has served on numerous national committees. His research focuses on complications and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, the complications of intestinal failure, and long-term parenteral nutrition.
