Publié au sommet de la gloire de Pasolini (1964), pendant le tournage de L'Évangile selon saint Matthieu et après celui de La Ricotta, ce livre fait réapparaître un Pasolini secret (plusieurs poèmes sont des journaux tenus pendant des tournages et des repérages) découvrant un autre monde (Israël, l'Afrique), alors que ses précédents recueils étaient profondément tournés vers l'ltalie.
On ne peut pas séparer le travail poétique de Pasolini de ses autres activités. Sa création s'est épanouie dans tous les domaines : roman, critique, politique, cinéma. Mais c'est dans le poème écrit qu'il concentrait sa personnalité, y faisant percevoir les blessures de sa vie intime et la puissance de sa voix révoltée. Ce recueil est traduit intégralement en français pour la première fois.
