Kim Märkl wurde 1961 in Cleveland, Ohio, geboren. Sie studierte Musik an der Indiana University in Bloomington, wo sie ihr Baccalaureat erhielt, und anschließend an der Northwestern University in Evanston mit abschließendem Magister Diplom. 1985 erhielt sie ein Fulbright Stipendium für das Studium in Deutschland. Nach Erhalt ihres Solistendiploms im Fach Klarinette an der Musikhochschule Freiburg blieb sie in Europa. Nach vielen Jahren Tätigkeit im Kammermusikbereich und Orchestern ist sie seit 2002 als Komponistin/Produzentin und Autorin beschäftigt.
