The World Today Series: Western Europe is an annually updated presentation of each sovereign country in Western Europe, past and present. It is broken down into individual chapters on each country dealing with its geography, people, history, political system, constitution, parliament, decentralization and states if a federation, parties, political leaders and elections. There are also sections on foreign and defense policy, economy, culture, future and a lengthy bibliography.

Wayne C. Thompson taught politics at Washington and Lee University. Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Virginia Military Institute. Ohio State University (B.A. in Government); Claremont Graduate School (M.A. and Ph.D. with distinction). He did further graduate study at the University of Gottingen, Paris/Sorbonne and Freiburg im Breisgau, where he was subsequently a guest professor. He has studied and researched in Europe for many years as a Woodrow Wilson, Fulbright, Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) and Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. The Canadian government, through its Embassy in Washington, awarded him a Faculty Enrichment Grant to do research in Canada. During the 1995-1996 academic year he was a Fulbright Professor in Estonia, and from 1999-2000 he was a visiting professor at the Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama. In 2001 he was a Fulbright Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, and continued for seven years to teach at that graduate institution. He has authored ten books and many articles and book reviews on politics, history and political theory. He is currently working on a book about George C. Marshall as Secretary of Defense.
