Zusatztext The Commentary is admirably suited to being read alongside the text. The MSS are described in an Olympian treatment of the history of the text with a thoroughness not encountered before ... A commentary of characteristic brilliance. Informationen zum Autor Aristophanes ( c. 446 - c. 386 BC), son of Philippus, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. Also known as "The Father of Comedy", Aristophanes depicted the life of ancient Athens and ridiculed authority leading to a case of slander brought by Plato which led to Socrates' death. Aristophanes' second play,The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced too, this time by Cleon but details of any subsequent trial are unknown and Aristophanes went on to caricature Cleon in his later plays, especially in The Knights. Klappentext Among extant Greek comedies, the Frogs is unique for the light it throws on classical Greek attitudes to tragedy and to literature in general. Sir Kenneth Dover's authoritative edition, which drew together the relevant scholarship in a full introduction and extensive commentary, has been the most comprehensive edition available. The general purpose and character of this abridged version remains the same: to provide a helpful guide for students who wish to translate the play or need to interpret it for performance. In this edition nothing relevant to the performance of the play on stage has been sacrificed, while information on manuscripts and discussion of the history of the text have been pared to a minimum, and arguments on metrical analysis and other controversial points have been abbreviated. A few conclusions reached in the original edition have been changed in the light of the work done by other scholars since 1993. The inclusion of a vocabulary should reduce the need for students to have recourse to a lexicon. Zusammenfassung This new abridged edition of Aristophanes' Frogs provides the students with the text of the play and includes a detailed commentary and full introduction. Sir Kenneth Dover has now abridged the acclaimed edition which he first produced in 1993 and added a vocabulary which eliminates the need for recourse to a lexicon. The result is an edition which fits much more closely the needs of students....
