LA RUSSIE A CHEVAL

En 1889, le sotnik Pechkov (chef d'un escadron de cosaques) entreprend un voyage de neuf mille kilomètres sur un petit cheval mandchou. Parti des rives du fleuve Amour, il arrive à Saint-Pétersbourg moins de deux cents jours plus tard : un exploit équestre inouï. De son journal de voyage nous retiendrons surtout le témoignage d'un soldat sur sa patrie et sa découverte de la société industrielle naissante.

En 1890, l'Américain Stevens croise le sotnik en allant, lui, de Saint-Pétersbourg jusqu'en Crimée sur un cheval hongrois baptisé Texas. Ici la performance équestre s'efface devant la peinture des mœurs russes. Pour le journaliste, qui rencontrera Tolstoï, le cheval est «le meilleur moyen d'entrer en contact avec le vrai peuple russe».
