L'Invitation au château

Dans un château, vers 1900, un bal va servir de cadre au traquenard tendu par Horace, jeune homme cynique et amer, car Diana, dont il est secrètement épris, semble lui préférer Frédéric, son propre frère jumeau. Il décide de convier à la soirée une jeune et gracieuse danseuse de l'Opéra, qui aura pour seule mission de séduire ce dernier et de le détourner de Diana.

L'Invitation au château (1947), pièce noire déguisée en rosé, renoue avec la tradition de la comédie d'intrigue, issue du théâtre latin et italien et des Fourberies de Scapin. En choisissant de mettre en scène des jumeaux, à la suite de Plaute, Shakespeare et Goldoni, Anouilh élabore un jeu dramatique, alerte et complexe, mené par Horace, dont le sombre dessein ne cesse de se heurter au ballet tourbillonnant des autres personnages.
