MASSACRES DES ARMENIENS -LES-

En pleine Première Guerre mondiale, entre avril 1915 et juillet 1916, se déroula le premier génocide du XX^e siècle : sur ordre du gouvernement nationaliste jeune-turc, près de 1,5 million d'Arméniens de l'Empire ottoman furent exterminés.
Dès novembre 1915, dans cet ouvrage pionnier, l'historien anglais Arnold J. Toynbee, l'une des grandes figures intellectuelles et humanistes du siècle passé, décryptait de façon synthétique les causes et les mécanismes du « meurtre d'une nation ». « Les déportations furent délibérément conduites avec une brutalité calculée pour provoquer un maximum de victimes en route, écrira-t-il en 1967 dans ses Mémoires. Là est le crime. Et l'étude que j'y consacrai laissa dans mon esprit une impression qui ne fut pas effacée par le génocide commis avec encore plus de sang-froid, et sur une plus grande échelle, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale par les Nazis. »
