Les chaises

Dans cette pièce, Poirot-Delpech voyait, en 1961, «la plus accomplie des tragédies modernes». La troisième pièce d'Ionesco, créée en 1952, reprise en 1956, connaît maintenant un succès qui ne se dément pas. Le sujet des Chaises est, nous dit l'auteur, «le vide ontologique» ; mais c'est aussi un drame personnel, le miroir d'une conscience. On y retrouve la nostalgie de l'enfance, le sentiment de culpabilité, l'horreur de la vieillesse et de la mort. C'est encore une comédie qui, bien souvent, excite le rire par ses clowneries, ses calembours, ses parodies, ses pirouettes. C'est un ballet : celui des chaises amoncelées dans le mouvement accéléré d'un tourbillon fantastique, et qui demeurent vides. Les vieux font semblant de recevoir une foule d'invités, jusqu'à ce qu'un seul personnage apparaisse enfin sur la scène : hallucination ? vérité du théâtre ? L'Orateur tant attendu est sourd et muet, et la scène demeure vide, encombrée de chaises.
