Marivaux a construit sa pièce, l'une des plus célèbres, en opposant le monde de la cour au monde rural, la richesse à la pauvreté, le pouvoir à l'impuissance. Le prince tente en effet de séparer Arlequin de Silvia, pour mieux lui témoigner son amour, et jette Flaminia dans les bras d'Arlequin. Le couple initial est défait, le prince épousera Silvia, et Arlequin, anobli, se marie avec Flaminia : c'est la «double inconstance». Habile manipulateur, le souverain, à l'image de l'auteur, a fait mourir un amour partagé, et en a fait naître deux autres, malgré l'unité de temps maintenue par les règles du théâtre classique. Le temps de l'amour éternel est rétrospectivement démasqué comme une illusion, et remplacé par le temps du plaisir éphémère.
