Haut fonctionnaire actif à Constantinople sous le règne d'Alexis IerComnène (1081-1118), Jean Skylitzès est l'auteur d'une Synopsis historique où il raconte les règnes des empereurs byzantins depuis la mort de Nicéphore Ier en 811 jusqu'à la destitution de Michel VI le Vieux en 1057. Dans cette uvre, il combine les histoires écrites par ses prédécesseurs, dont beaucoup ne sont pas parvenues jusqu'à nous. La Synopsis de Skylitzès se trouve être ainsi la source narrative la plus complète pour les deux siècles et demi qu'elle couvre. Elle constitue une voie d'accès privilégiée pour qui veut connaître Byzance à travers ce que les Byzantins eux-mêmes en ont dit.
La traduction française, fondée sur le texte grec édité par Hans Thurn en 1973 dans le Corpus Fontium Historiae Byzantins, est accompagnée d'une annotation, d'un lexique technique, de tableaux et de cartes qui font de cet ouvrage une introduction à l'histoire de l'Empire byzantin à l'époque de son apogée.
A high official in Constantinople in the reign of Alexis I Comnenus (1081-1118), John Skylitzes was the author of an Historical Synopsis in which he gave an account of the reigns of the emperors of Byzantium from the death of Nicephorus I in 811 to the deposition of Michael VI in 1057. His work is a compilation of histories written by his predecessors, many of whom have not corne down to us. The Synopsis of Skylitzes is thus the most complete narrative source for the two centuries it covers.It provides those seeking knowledge of Byzantium with a rare insight into what the Byzantines themselves had to say about it.
Based on the edition of the Greek text by Hans Thurn which appeared in the Corpus Fontium Historiae Byzantinae in 1973, the French translation is accompanied by notes, an index of technical terms, tables and maps, making this work an introduction to the history of the Byzantine Empire in the period of its zenith.
