Brûleur
Au Maroc, nom donné aux personnes qui, dans la clandestinité, veulent franchir la frontière de l'Europe (« brûler la frontière ») en traversant le détroit de Gibraltar, le plus souvent à bord d'embarcations sommaires.
Entre Tanger et Gibraltar, entre Ceuta et Tarifa, des gens partent, des gens passent. Venus du Maroc, de plus bas en Afrique ou d'ailleurs (Turquie, Asie ou Tchétchénie), ils quittent ville ou village, famille, maison (voire travail), laissent tout derrière eux et parfois leur avenir, franchissent le détroit dans la clandestinité, en désespoir de cause, aimantés par l'Occident. Ce sont les « brûleurs », ceux qui lâchent et risquent tout (le détroit fait trois victimes par jour), ceux qui « brûlent » la frontière, comme on dit là-bas, mais brûlent aussi leurs papiers, sacrifiant leur identité à l'espoir de renaître ailleurs, différents, une fois franchis les remparts sans cesse plus hostiles de l'Europe.
Ces immigrés clandestins, le photographe Thomas Chable les a suivis et accompagnés régulièrement, pendant plusieurs années. Itinérant, intimiste, engagé, libre pour sa part mais contraint à la discrétion, pas vraiment reporter, il nous livre la chronique de leur quotidien, retrace depuis ses origines ce désir d'exil, évoque l'histoire tendre, tragique ou anonyme - comme le fait aussi Aziz Chouaki, dans un texte inédit qui accompagne les photos présentées ici - de ceux qui tentent enfin de choisir leur propre destin.
Burner
In Morocco, this is the name given to people who, in clandestinity, attempt to cross the border into Europe (« burn the border ») via the Strait of Gibraltar, most often in makeshift boats.
Tangier to Gibraltar, Ceuta to Tarifa, people set off, people pass through. Coming from Morocco, farther south in Africa or elsewhere (Turkey, Asia or Chechnya), they leave their cities or villages, families, homes, and even jobs. They leave everything behind, and sometimes their future as well, crossing the Strait in clandestinity, driven by hopelessness, drawn by the West. These are the « burners », those who forsake everything and risk it all (the Strait claims three victims per day), those who « burn » the border, as they say there, but who also burn their documents, sacrificing their identity in the hopes of a rebirth elsewhere, a new life, once they make it over the ramparts of Europe, which each day become more hostile.
The photographer Thomas Chable followed these clandestine immigrants, along the same trail, for several years. Itinerant, intimist, involved, personally free but constrained by discretion, not exactly a reporter, he brings us his chronicle of their daily lives, retracing from its origin this desire for exile. And - like Aziz Chouaki in a hitherto unpublished text narrating the photos - he evokes the tender, tragic or anonymous story of those who in the end attempt to choose their own destiny.
