A true gateway to Brittany, Fougères and its surrounding area offer a wide variety of landscapes and a wealth of buildings which clearly illustrate the rich history of this troubled border area which long put up resistance before finally becoming part of France.
The monumental fortress that gave birth to the town of Fougères retains the traces of having, throughout the Middle Ages, adapted its architecture to advances in military technology. The town is a good illustration of the economic and commercial activities that have brought prosperity to its inhabitants over the centuries.
