Souillée dès son plus jeune âge, Thérèse, la jeune violoniste d'un minable orchestre de province, ne parvient pas à accepter l'amour, l'argent et la famille du brillant pianiste Florent. Solitude, honte, poids du passé, solidarité de la misère et de la déchéance, impossible pureté, mythe du bonheur, achèvent de mettre en place les éléments récurrents d'un univers dramatique original. En soeurs cadettes de Thérèse, Antigone et Jeanne (l'Alouette) obéiront à la même exigence en refusant toute compromission.
