Agrégé de philosophie et grand spécialiste
de la pensée grecque, Jean-Pierre Vernant
a longtemps occupé la chaire d'études
comparées des religions antiques au
Collège de France. En hommage à son
travail, cet ouvrage rassemble plusieurs de
ses articles et exposés échelonnés entre
1965 et 1975, portant sur le caractère
universel du fait religieux, l'avènement de
la pensée rationnelle ou encore les rapports
entre histoire et psychologie. Ses recherches
visant à «reconnaître au phénomène religieux
le statut d'un objet de connaissance,
accessible comme tout autre à l'investigation
scientifique», Jean-Pierre Vernant est l'un des
premiers à considérer l'homme primitif par le
prisme du contexte social et historique, et à se
référer aux sciences humaines (linguistique,
ethnologie...) pour expliquer la spécificité de
son être au monde.
