Hare Brain, Tortoise Mind

In this accelerated age, our decisive and businesslike ways of thinking serve us well when confronted with the expected questions. But faced with complexity, we become impatient. Our hare brains-logical, fast, machine-like-are unprepared for ambiguity, paradox, and sleeping on it. We assume that the quick-thinking hare brain will beat out the slower intuition of the tortosie mind. However, new research in cognitive science is challenges this premise, suggesting that patience and confusion, rather than rigor and certainty, are the essential precursors of wisdom. Guy Claxton makes an appeal to be less analytical and let our creativity have free reign. He argues compellingly that the mind works best when we trust our unconscious that intelligent resource that needs only time and receptivity to function. Claxton also pushes for a reevaluation of society''s obsession with results-orientated thinking and problem-solving under pressure.
