Helme Heine, einer der erfolgreichsten Bilderbuchautoren der letzten Jahrzehnte, wurde am 4. April 1941 in Berlin geboren. Er studierte Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Kunst und reiste Anfang der 60er Jahre durch Europa und Asien. In Südafrika, Johannesburg, gründete er das politisch-literarische Kabarett 'Sauerkraut'. Er übernahm die Regie einer Theatergruppe und wurde Herausgeber einer satirischen Zeitschrift. 1976 begann er seine internationale Karriere mit dem ersten Bilderbuch. Seine Geschichten handeln von Zusammenleben und Freundschaft. Seine Arbeiten erhielten viele Auszeichnungen und Preise, u.a. Schönste deutsche Bücher, den Europäischen Jugendbuchpreis und den Großen Preis der Deutschen Akademie für Kinder - und Jugendliteratur. Helme Heine schreibt auch für Erwachsene und zeichnet Comics sowie Zeichentrickfilme.
