Sven-Erik Nordenbo is based at Copenhagan University, Denmark. Klappentext During the past decade there has been renewed interest in the German idea of Bildung . This collection of newly written essays asks how this classical idea of an education of the self - as proposed by neo-humanists such as Schiller, Von Humboldt and Hegel - can make sense of the education of humanity in the information age. The contributors to the book share the conviction that, as long as problems of self and society engage us, the legacy of this serious humanist thought is still relevant; all the more so, because central to the idea of Bildung is the idea of a dynamic transformation extending through culture and politics. This timely re-examination of the tradition of Bildung in the context of postmodernity offering crucial insights for the theory, practice and politics of education.
