John Crook is an architectural historian, archaeological consultant, and photographer. Rodney Hubbuck lived in Petersfield for many years and has a special interest in the architecture and stained glass of the South and South West. Klappentext Winchester, with its Cathedral, Castle, College and churches is unrivalled for medieval architecture, and the surrounding countryside is rich in historic villages and an abundance of country houses. This volume of The Buildings of England also includes monuments of unique national and international significance: Jane Austen's house at Chawton; the spectacular French Imperial mausoleum at Farnborough Abbey; and Stanley Spencer's moving series of war paintings for the chapel at Burghclere. Zusammenfassung Winchester is not only unrivalled for medieval architecture but like many of the smaller towns! such as Alton and Alresford! has some of the most charming streets in the southern counties. The countryside is rich in small villages and an abundance of houses and gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
