- Waterproof - Tear-Resistant - Topographic MapPinnacles National Park is famous for the lava spires that rise from boulder-studded canyons and rolling chaparral hills. Pinnacles was proclaimed a national monument in 1908, and a national park 105 years later in 2013. Visitors come to appreciate the unspoiled wilderness, hike the trails, climb rock walls, explore quiet caves, and camp in the shade of ancient oaks.
The incredible landscape of Pinnacles National Park has been shaped by the movement of tectonic plates. Dividing up the Earth's crust, these immense plates are constantly in motion forming mountain ranges, volcanoes, and other features along their boundaries. Scientists theorize that plates interact in at least three ways, two of which are significant to the formation of Pinnacles: subduction zones and transform boundaries.
