Die Sammlung Moderne Kunst der Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen in München besitzt Weltrang. Seit 2002 werden die künstlerischen Meilensteine des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts in Räumen der Pinakothek der Moderne gezeigt. Neben dem größten Werkkomplex von Max Beckmann in Europa finden sich hier herausragende Gemälde von Kandinsky, Kirchner und Picasso, bedeutende Arbeiten von Bacon, Baselitz oder Warhol, fotografische Konvolute von August Sander bis Jeff Wall ebenso wie aktuelle Positionen der Malerei und der Medienkunst. Mit einer exzellenten Auswahl an Meisterwerken stellt der Band das künstlerische Spektrum der Sammlung vor. In prägnanten Essays widmen sich die Kuratoren den vertretenen Strömungen, von den französischen Fauvisten und Kubisten, den italienischen Futuristen, deutschen Expressionisten und dem Bauhaus bis hin zur Neuen Sachlichkeit und dem Surrealismus. Weitere Kapitel befassen sich mit Künstlern zur Zeit des Ersten Weltkrieges und des Nationalsozialismus.
