North Carolina has always loved pirates. From Blackbeard to Stede Bonnet, from the Golden Age of Piracy to present day, we are infatuated with the tales of pirate legends, ghostly ships that sailed the Graveyard of the Atlantic, and down to Oak Island, Beaufort, Bald Head, and all parts of the North Carolina coast between these ports.
Pirates In The Mists contains 16 stories of pirates, rogues, and villains that either graced or terrorized our coast. Blackbeard and his trip to Ocracoke is in there, naturally, but so is Stede bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate, and Captain Kidd, who may have buried treasure on a hidden island near present day Wilmington. Theodosia Burr-Alston may have met her watery fate at the hands of notorious and deadly pirates, but just who they were, and where it happened, means that she gets included in two stories, very different tales indeed. Even more modern piracy is included, with the historical loss of the Carroll A. Deering, which may have been taken by pirates in the early 1900s, and the more villainous U-boats of World War II, that hunted and sank ships and people by the thousands, leaving a trail of death and damage that still lingers to this day.
Even present day pirates are included, with Captain Horatio Sinbad, a real honest to goodness privateer with a pirate ship armed with cannon makes his way into the book. Based out of Beaufort, he trains kids in the pirate way, learning while sailing his ship across the Atlantic waters.
Pirates In The Mists has much more than just the usual tales. Pirates have been part of our lives for hundreds of years, but not as many are known. This book includes stories rarely told in most other books, about pirates who are unknown or lost to time, only to come back to life in these pages. It is an appealing, portable, and affordable package for retailers. Locals to the coast and visitors alike will find it appealing in that it offers something new to read, rather than the same stories told time and time again.
